There’s still time to enter the 2010 SAVE Award contest!

Did you create a project that could help the Department of Defense cut costs and operate more efficiently, but shelved it for next year’s SAVE Award? Well there’s still an opportunity for you to share your great idea this year!

The 2010 SAVE Award contest has been extended through this Thursday, and the DepSecDef is calling for all DoD employees to think big and submit their ideas. To enter, simply go to the following website and submit a project you believe will assist in streamlining work at the DoD and eliminate waste: http://saveaward2010.ideascale.com.

It only takes moments to enter, but participants gain the exciting ability to create change that will last a lifetime- as well as the unique chance of explaining their winning idea to the President at the White House.

Listen LIVE Wednesday, March 17, at 2 p.m. EDT, when we explore the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS), a program that provides high school students the support and resources to design and conduct original research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics areas.

We’re joined by Dr. Lynn Smith, director of the European Regional JSHS and member of the Department of Defense Education Activity.

Smith will discuss the major goals of the program and how it’s working to widen the pool of trained talent that will ultimately conduct research and development vital to our nation. Several students and mentors taking part in the JSHS program will join the call to discuss their experiences and their plans for the future.

The 2011 Defense Budget: A Conversation with Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller) Robert F. Hale

On Today’s Defense Discussions, Mr. Hale will provide a summary of the Department of Defense’s proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2011, and then answer questions from participants representing various national security think tanks. He will highlight budgetary support for programs and initiatives within the Department and make comparisons to budgets from previous fiscal years.

Defense Discussions is a new audio series hosted by the Office of Community Relations and Public Liaison, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs. Defense Discussions is designed to provide opportunities for key stakeholders to engage in dialogue with Department of Defense principals on a wide range of DoD programs, policies and operations, and to make those discussions available to the general public.

Mullen Clarifies DoD Role in Haiti Relief

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, has been making the rounds today, helping Secretary of Defense Robert Gates clarify the role the U.S. Department of Defense expects to play in the coming days and weeks as the international community helps Haiti recover from the Jan. 12 earthquake that has left tens of thousands dead.

Today, he spoke with the Pentagon Channel, explaining how the Department of Defense can help Haiti, and how they plan to carry out the initial disaster response and the subsequent humanitarian missions.

Primarily, he said, the services’ can help with initial response and relief by supplementing local government agencies and helping other assisting nations and organizations by providing a certain amount of infrastructure.

“Most of all, what we bring is a significant part of the relief effort,” he said. “We try to make it as good as we possibly can, for those who have suffered so much, as rapidly as we can.”
