One Cool Day On The Job

I started my day by jumping out of a plane. How many people can say that? That’s right, the Army’s Golden Knights were in town and an opportunity came up that could not be squandered.

My co-worker, Marine Staff Sgt. Brian Buckwalter, and I headed to Fort Meade, Md., Tuesday morning ready to put our lives in the hands of the Army’s highly skilled parachutists.

We met up with the team and sat through a safety brief before putting on a snazzy black and gold jump suit that came with handy goggles attached to a lovely cap, which made me look like a member of the Conehead family.

Each of us had our own Golden Knight, and I was relieved to know my jumper, Kurt, has thousands of jumps under his belt. I’m one lucky Sailor to even have an opportunity to jump out of a plane with the world’s best parachute team.

With my jumpsuit on, I headed for the van ready to take on another exciting adventure – because I have the coolest job in the world.  Well, the second coolest job in the world. Kurt told me I would be on the first crew to plummet to earth, and that’s when my nerves took control and butterflies flooded my stomach. Skydiving sounded so great a few days ago! Now, it seemed crazy.

“Cool” was about all I could muster up when the assistant news director told me on Monday that I would jump out of an airplane with the Army’s Golden Knights on Tuesday. Don’t be fooled by the nonchalant reply I gave her; inside, I was crazy with excitement, and at the same time, was faced with a bit of trepidation. The calm demeanor was a front. My mouth had just said “yes” faster than my brain processed the offer, and I needed a minute to digest what I agreed to do. I was going to leap out of an aircraft with the best parachutists in the world. It was an opportunity few get, certainly not Marine combat correspondent. But sure enough, just like President George H.W. Bush, Bill Murray, and Chuck Norris, I too would fall thousands of feet at 120 mph with nothing more than some thin fabric to slow me down. Cool.

On Tuesday, June 2, my fellow Pentagon Channel reporter MC1 Liz Murray and I drove up to Ft. Meade, Maryland – about 40 minutes away from our studios. She would also get to jump. The conversation on the ride up centered on our nerves, our excitement, and how we would tell the story. (more…)

Teen Aviation Camp: Teens Get a Taste of Aviation and Life at the Air Force Academy

By Army Sgt. John Mann

Colorado Springs, CO, June 2, 2009 – Why does a visit to the Air Force Academy become nostalgic for an Army Soldier like me? It has nothing to do with the sophistication of the campus or the majestic beauty of the nearby Rocky Mountains, as sophisticated and majestic as they are.  Rather, it is a group of high school students reminding me of a time when there were a lot of big discoveries and decisions about the future before me.

The teenagers I met today are campers in the Teen Aviation Camp, a program for military high school students here at the Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. The camp, which is now in its tenth year, brings teens to the prestigious campus to give them a taste of aviation and life at the Academy.

The campers learn about the science and engineering behind flight by flying simulators, building gliders, and then taking off and flying in a Cessna airplane. Many will be flying a plane before they’ve driven a car. (more…)

MC1 Liz Murray Interviews First Lady Michelle Obama (click image to watch)

By MC1 Liz Murray

I had the privilege of interviewing First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House Thursday.  Needless to say, my nerves were on the fritz all day leading up to our conversation.  Working as a military reporter for the Pentagon Channel has allowed me the good fortune of interviewing many very interesting people, but this is one opportunity I really did not want to mess up.

Three of us traveled together to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, myself, my producer, Karen Nowowieski, and American Forces Press Service writer, Samantha Quigley.
