Mental Health Month: Winning Against PTS



U.S. Navy Capt. Paul Hammer, from the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury, said great strides have been made in combating post-traumatic stress. But during a recent roundtable he hosted to discuss issues in conjunction with Mental Health Month, he said there are still difficulties in treatment and the stigma surrounding mental illness hasn’t been completely removed.

Military Cracks Down on Synthetic Cannabis



“Spice,” the synthetic cannibinoid that mimics the effects of marijuana, is becoming increasingly scrutinized by the federal government and military services. The designer drug has led to an increase in hospital visits and calls to poison control centers, according to the DEA. Many armed services have guidelines in place, like the Navy’s zero tolerance policy, to discourage recreational use of such substances.

This Pentagon Channel report explains how the drugs can adversely affect service members and the commands t hey serve, and new measures being put into practice in order to put these drugs — and the service members that use them — in their place.
