DoDLive Bloggers Roundtable: Discussion from the LandWarNet Conference

Giorgio Bertoli, senior engineer for the Information and Networks Operation division, CERDEC's Intelligence and Information Warfare Directorate

On Aug. 25, 10:00 a.m., from the LandWarNet conference in Tampa, Fla. we hosted a bloggers roundtable which provided a high-level view of the evolving CYBERSPACE technology landscape. The speakers discussed research & development efforts being pursued by the Research, Development and Engineering Command’s communications-electronics center (CERDEC) in this new operational domain.

Giorgio Bertoli is an electrical engineer and computer scientist and is currently serving as senior engineer for the Information and Networks Operation division as part of CERDEC’s Intelligence and Information Warfare Directorate. Bertoli has more than 18 years of combined active military duty and civilian government engineer experience in electronic warfare, cyber network operations and cyber-related technologies.

Stephen Lucas is an electrical engineer and is currently serving as the chief engineer for the Cyber Security and Information Assurance division of CERDEC’s Space and Terrestrial Communications Directorate.  Lucas has over 25 years of civilian government experience in information assurance, communications security/transport security, computer/network security and cyber defensive capabilities/technologies.

While much of Bertoli’s efforts focus on the offensive tactics taken during a cyber-attack, Lucas works to defend the network. Bertoli and Lucas recently co-wrote a blog using a football analogy to illustrate the dynamic nature of their work. Both have been featured in publications such as Defense Systems and FedTech magazine over the last few months.

Joining us on the call were Tom Goering, of Navy Cyberspace; Zach Rausnitz, of FierceGovernmentIT; Dale Kissinger, of Military Avenue; and Jared Serbu of Federal News Radio.

We are proud to announce that Monday, August 22 at 10:30 a.m. EDT, DoDLive hosted a Bloggers Roundtable program with the 75th Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus who discussed alternative energy sources and the Navy’s energy goals.

Shortly after assuming office, in October 2009,  Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus laid out five aggressive energy goals to improve our energy security and efficiency, increase our energy independence, and help lead the nation toward a clean energy economy.  Mabus directed the Department of the Navy (DoN) to increase alternative energy ashore.  By 2020, the DoN will produce at least 50 percent of shore-based energy requirements from alternative sources and 50 percent of DoN installations will be net-zero.

To learn more about what the Navy is doing with alternative energy, visit Task Force Energy on Facebook. Task Force Energy is focused on conserving energy, developing alternative energy options, and securing energy distribution.

Also check out the Green Fleet blog and the Naval Energy Twitter feed.

Joining us on the call were Tom Goering, of Navy Cyberspace blog; Chuck Simmins, of America’s North Shore Journal; Dale Kissinger, of Military Avenue; Graham Warwick, of Aviation Week; Noah Shachtman, of Danger Room; Josh Stewart, of Navy Times; Geoff Ziezulewicz, of Stars and Stripes; Michael Fabey, of Aviation Week; and Eagle1, of Eaglespeak.

U.S. Army Bloggers Roundtable: U.S. Forces-Iraq

On Wednesday, August 3 at 10:30 am EDT we hosted a U.S. Army Bloggers’ Roundtable with Maj. Gen. Thomas Richardson, J4 director, U.S. Forces- Iraq. He answered questions about the current situation in Iraq regarding U.S. Forces-Iraq’s role as they begin reposturing forces in Iraq.  Approximately one million pieces of U.S. Government-owned equipment still remains in Iraq.  Where will all of it go?

U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Thomas Richardson

September 1, 2010 marked the beginning of Operation New Dawn and the next chapter of the military mission in Iraq. Many of our shared goals are within reach, but there is still important work to be done. Through the actions of our military, we will demonstrate our nation’s long-term commitment to the Iraqi people and set the conditions for an enduring strategic partnership with a sovereign, stable, self-reliant and unified Iraq.

Types of Equipment in Iraq:

  • Unit Organizational Property – property that belongs to a U.S. Forces unit that is maintained on a daily basis at home station and on deployment.
  • Theater Provided Equipment – equipment unique to the “theater of operations” – Iraq in this case. This equipment is provided to deployed units upon their arrival.  The type of equipment issued depends on the unit’s mission in Iraq.
  • Contractor Managed/Government Owned Equipment- equipment purchased with U.S. government funds for use in the execution of contractor missions in support of the U.S. government.
