Medical Monday: TRICARE Observes Suicide Prevention Month

U.S. Navy Capt. Robert DeMartino

U.S. Public Health Service Capt. Robert DeMartino, U.S. Navy.

By Capt. Robert DeMartino
Director, Behavioral Medicine Division
TRICARE Management Activity

Serving in the military can be both physically and mentally stressful for service members and their families, and put them at risk for depression.  As difficult as it is to observe such distress in oneself or in a loved one, it is everyone’s responsibility to act when the situation demands it.  Too often, a person fails to reach out for help until he or she is in the midst of a crisis.  As a community, we must not accept inaction and delay in the face of true and serious need of those in psychological distress.

TRICARE observes September as Suicide Prevention Month.

It is important to learn the warning signs of suicide so you can spot them in yourself and others. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline lists several:

  • Threatening to hurt or kill oneself
  • Looking for ways to kill oneself by seeking access to firearms, pills, etc.
  • Talking or writing about death, dying or suicide
  • Feeling hopeless
  • Feeling rage or uncontrolled anger or seeking revenge
  • Acting reckless or engaging in risky activities – seemingly without thinking
  • Feeling trapped – like there’s no way out
  • Increasing alcohol or drug use
  • Withdrawing from friends, family and society
  • Feeling anxious or agitated, being unable to sleep or sleeping all the time
  • Experiencing dramatic mood changes
  • Seeing no reason for living or having no sense of purpose in life
