Episode #111: Weekly News Roundup for Nov. 18

In “This Week in the DoD” for Nov. 18:

New agreements between the U.S. and countries in the Asia-Pacific region will mean an increased military presence in Southeast Asia, including a Marine detachment in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.

Congress has unanimously passed a bill that will provide new benefits to veterans seeking to join the civilian workforce as well as provide tax incentives for businesses that hire veterans.

Defense officials including the Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta have re-affirmed their position that sequestration (mandatory across-the-board budget cuts) would hurt the Defense Department’s effectiveness.

Servicemembers in Europe and Asia are responding to the latest in a series of earthquakes that have devastated cities in Turkey. They’re delivering supplies including cold-weather tents for survivors who lost their homes.

DoDLive Bloggers Roundtable: 14th Chiefs of Defense Conference

Maj. Gen. Michael A. Keltz is the Director, Strategic Planning and Policy (J5), U.S. Pacific Command

We held a DoDLive Bloggers Roundtable on Wednesday, Nov. 16, with U.S. Maj. Gen. Michael A. Keltz, Director, J-5, Strategic Planning and Policy, who discussed the recent 14th annual Chiefs of Defense Conference (CHOD).

This engagement brought together senior military leaders from nations in the Asia-Pacific region to discuss mutual security challenges, improve relationships and foster security cooperation. The roundtable also covered ways the U.S. Pacific Command is partnering with more than 36 nations in areas of mutual interest, such as humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, military-to-military training, building the U.S.-India strategic partnership and countering transnational threats.

Joining us on the call were Chuck Simmins, of America’s North Shore Journal; Walter Pincus, of the Washington Post; Gail Harris, of the Foreign Policy Blog; John Doyle, of 4GWar; Titus Ledbetter, of Inside the Air Force; Megan Eckstein, of Inside the Navy; William Wan, of the Washington Post; Charley Keyes, of CNN; and Kyle Mizokami.

The man accused of masterminding multiple terrorist attacks, including the bombing of the USS Cole in 2000, is facing trial in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He’s the first suspect to face a newly revamped military commission.

President Barack Obama announced a new executive order giving tax breaks to employers who hire veterans and wounded warriors. In conjunction, the Department of Labor has created new online resources for veterans searching for a job.

Veterans Day is Friday, Nov. 11. To celebrate and honor those who served in the United States military, we share a story from Bernardine “Brownie” Plasters, who served as a nurse in World War II.

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta shared a personal message with service members and veterans to honor Veterans Day.

An attack on a convoy in Kabul, Afghanistan, Oct. 29 has killed 17 people. Of those killed, five were International Security Assistance Force service members and eight were ISAF civilian employees. It’s the deadliest attack on coalition forces in Kabul since the war in Afghanistan began.

Marine Sgt. Maj. Bryan Battaglia is the newest Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He spoke with the Pentagon Channel about his new role.

The family of mine-resistant ambush protected vehicles, or MRAPs, are receiving upgrades.

The U.S. is helping severely injured Libyans who can’t receive necessary medical care in their country by medically evacuating them to American hospitals in the U.S. and Germany.

The Secretary of Defense has been traveling in Asia, visiting defense leaders from Indonesia, South Korea and Japan. While in the region, he visited troops stationed there.

This weekend, some 30,000 runners will descend on the D.C. area for the Marine Corps Marathon.
