BIA: The Basics of Brain Injury

Brain injury is a complicated topic. Even giving a simple definition is difficult, because brain injuries can be caused in so many ways and can manifest themselves in so many ways.

The Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center defines traumatic brain injuries as follows:

“A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the result of a blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the function of the brain. Not all blows or jolts to the head result in a TBI. The severity of such an injury may range from “mild”—a brief change in mental status or consciousness—to “severe,” an extended period of unconsciousness or amnesia after the injury. The terms “concussion” and “mild TBI” (mTBI) are interchangeable.”

Real-Time Access to Army Warrior Care Information

By Alan Morales
WTC Strategic Communications

Every day, Army Warriors in Transition achieve success. Whether it’s starting a new physical therapy regimen, earning a college degree, or starting their new career post injury, Warriors in Transition continually take action to get one step closer to independence.

The U.S. Army Warrior Transition Command (WTC) is determined to support Warriors in Transition and their successful transition back to the force or to civilian life. One way WTC accomplishes this mission is to make timely and accurate information available that can assist them during their journey post-injury.

Today, to continue enhancing its role as a reliable source of information, WTC is launching a Twitter page to update the warrior care community in real-time and an Army Wounded Warrior Program (AW2) Facebook page to direct specific information for severely wounded, ill, and injured Soldiers and Veterans. Check these pages out at:

These pages will help the Army cultivate a stronger online community of Warriors in Transition and caregivers while enabling individuals in related communities to comment and offer valuable information to the WTC population.

Check out these pages today and start “following” and “liking” them. You can offer assistance and perspective by sharing your knowledge and demonstrating your support.

If you have any questions please e-mail WTC at warriorcarecommunications@conus.army.mil or check out the WTC website for more information.

First Lady, Dr. Biden Discuss National Guard with Governors

Today First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden welcomed the members of the National Governor’s Association to the White House. In their address to America’s governors, they focused on helping military families and the role state governments play in helping National Guard families.

“I know I don’t have to tell any of you just how critical the National Guard is to our national security,” said Biden, whose son was deployed to Iraq as a member of the Delaware National Guard.  “Tens of thousands of our brave citizen soldiers are serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other regions –- and taken together, they make up nearly one half of our nation’s military strength.”

“They also respond to national disasters, humanitarian crises –- from 9/11 to Hurricane Katrina, to areas in need around the world — they answer the call under your leadership,” she added.

Episode #74: Weekly News Roundup for Feb. 18

In the “DoD This Week” podcast for Feb 18: Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen announced the newest iteration of “Ask the Chairman: A Virtual Town Hall.”

Deputy Secretary of Defense William J. Lynn III spoke at the RSA Conference in San Francisco and met with leaders from Silicon Valley companies to discuss DoD cybersecurity capabilities.

Defense leaders, including Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, testified about budgeting issues on Capitol Hill; DoD Comptroller Robert F. Hale spoke on a DoDLive Bloggers’ Roundtable about the budget as well.

Coalition leaders in Afghanistan gave progress updates: in Helmand province, civilians are standing up to the Taliban by sending their children to school and across the country, troops are readying for warmer weather and increased insurgent operations.

Chairman’s Corner: Ask the Chairman

I am getting ready to launch my third installment of “Ask the Chairman: A Virtual Town Hall,” and I need your support.

Over the next few weeks, I will be seeking and collecting your questions on any topic you want to raise.   This is a great opportunity for troops past and present, their families, and other concerned citizens to get to me directly and in an interactive manner.

For service members, especially those who have served abroad, this is your chance to address the decisions we make here in the Pentagon that affect you on a day-to-day basis.  Let me know what’s working, and what’s not.  Let me help explain something that may seem confusing to you now.

But, as I said, “Ask the Chairman” is not limited to our troops.  I hope to hear from family members, other concerned Americans, and citizens of the world as well, because in these critical times, there are challenges across the globe which demand our attention and our steady focus.

To participate, just send your question via YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, or any other medium from now until the end of the month.   I will answer those questions in the next and future segments of “Ask the Chairman”.  Send your questions today.  I’m waiting to hear from you.

-Admiral Mike Mullen
