DoD Announces Same-Sex Joint-Spouse Assignments

Equality is a social issue that has great historic significance for our country and is a concept that our society continues to refine with each passing generation. The Defense Department has recently taken steps to update its own concept of equality with the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Same-sex couples rejoiced as DADT fell away, giving them an unprecedented level of personal freedom within the military community. Soon after the law’s repeal, the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced that they would recognize same-sex unions for federal tax purposes. In response to these actions, the Defense Department now offers joint-spouse assignments for same-sex spouses, offering them the same opportunities and benefits that all married military couples receive.
