Heroes of History: Burton Cary, USS Leonard Wood Veteran

I am always intrigued by veterans’ stories about their time in service, especially from those who served in World War II. When I found this video of WWII veteran Burton Cary sharing his own story, I was hooked and knew I needed to share it.

Cary served with the U.S. Coast Guard during the war and recently sat down at his home in the Camelia Gardens Assisted Living Facility in Slidell, La., to give an oral history of his service aboard the U.S. Coast Guard-manned Navy troop transport ship USS Leonard Wood. He stood lookout watch on the ship while it was deployed to the Pacific Theater from 1943-1945.
