Following Retirement, Military Working Dog is Still Serving

November is National Warrior Care Month; the theme for this year’s observance is “Success through Transition — Education, Employment, Entrepreneurship.” In the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, “The Old Guard,” a special K-9 team is leaving active duty, but Staff Sgt. Katrina Kurz and her canine companion are committed to continuing to serve Wounded Warriors.

    Thank you for sharing this very touching story. I think that this is a great story that needs to be told. Not everyone is aware that working dogs or any other animal that the military employs, may be affected or traumatized by serving in war areas. Although the dog was diagnosed as having K-9 PTSD, this story shows that this dog is still able serve after retirement. This particular working dog is willing to continue to be an asset by assisting wounded warriors.

    I commend SSgt Katrina Kruz for adopting her working dog (I wish his name was mentioned in the story). I know that adopting the dogs are not always possible, but she took that chance, and now this dog is still able to do what he loves and is still able to be productive after his retirement. I am sure that the wounded warriors appreciate being able to interact with the dog during his visits to the hospitals and rehabilitation centers. I believe that they have a special bond that would be hard to break. Having such a bond is an amazing experience and everyone involved is the better for it.
