Dempsey: Look for Suicide Warning Signs

September is at an end and so too is Suicide Prevention and Awareness month. We’ve seen stories and videos from many military officials and service members about how to recognize when a service member is in need as well as what you can do to help all year long.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey reminds service members to be aware of suicide warning signs.

    Suicide prevention and awareness is not always the most
    comfortable subject for any of us within the DOD to discuss. Seeing senior
    leadership determined to address the issue with the resiliency demonstrated by
    Gen. Dempsey in this story is precisely what is needed to build the level of
    trust from our service members that will strengthen the programs that are in
    place to support them.

    One month out of the year is certainly not enough time to
    dedicate to a subject that impacts so many in such a tragic way as suicide. As
    difficult as the subject matter may be, I feel the publication of more and more
    stories like this can only help to lessen the impact of this tragedy on our
    service members and their loved ones that care so deeply for them.
