Prior to 1995, Fort Riley was not proficient at deploying troops by rail. With only six docks, it took 27 1/2 days to deploy the division to Desert Storm. With recent upgrades, the situation has dramatically improved. As a result, Fort Riley’s rail operations are now referred to as “the backbone of deployment”.
