Panetta’s Formal Swearing-in Ceremony

Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta's formal swearing-in ceremony at the Pentagon is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EDT today. The former CIA director was sworn into office as the 23rd secretary of defense on July 1, 2011. DOD graphic by Paul Sherman 

Vice President Joe Biden administered the oath of office to Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta during a formal Pentagon ceremony. The former CIA director took over as the 23rd secretary of defense after a private swearing-in ceremony, July 1, 2011.
