Those of you who have followed my blog over the last few months know that I am driven to ensuring our military spouses are afforded real opportunities to find careers that are portable and rewarding.  Our military spouses do so much to keep our families strong and resilient throughout long deployments and the increasing demands on our military; helping them realize their career aspirations is simply the right thing to do.  The White House has also made jobs for spouses a top priority as found in the President’s January 2011 Strengthening our Military Families report, and the First Lady and Dr. Biden’s ”Joining Forces” initiative, launched in April 2011.

I am delighted to let you know that the U.S. and Los Angeles Chambers of Commerce, in cooperation with the Department of Defense and the Department of Labor, are co-hosting a “Hiring Our Heroes” Los Angeles hiring fair on July 10, 2011, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Sony Pictures Studios.  This hiring fair is exclusively designed to connect both veterans AND military spouses to 21st century job opportunities with nearly 200 Fortune 500 companies!

Military spouses from the active, National Guard, and Reserve ranks from all Services, including the Coast Guard, are eligible to attend this FREE and unique event.  I encourage all military spouses and veterans who are looking to enter the workplace and who live in or near the greater Los Angeles area to register at www.regonline.com/HiringHeroesinLA (select “Military Spouse Registration” in the drop-down menu).   Only 500 spouses and 1,000 veterans will be permitted to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime event.  It’s first-come, first-served, so to ensure you are among the 500 spouses participating, be sure to register by June 13.  More details will be posted early next week on Military OneSource and in future blog posts.

You definitely will want to sign up for this hiring fair!

The companies and corporations participating have been screened to ensure they have the right kind of job and career opportunities for you.  Only those companies who have jobs immediately available are being allowed to attend.  In fact, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will be following up with these companies to determine how many resumes from military spouses they collected, how many job offers were ultimately made, and how many jobs were accepted by military spouses.

Important note:  participating spouses should bring 30 copies of their resumes.  If you do not have a resume, visit Military OneSource or call 1-800-342-9647 and ask to speak to a spouse career consultant who can assist you with writing a resume.

I am very excited at what’s on the horizon for our military spouses to help you find meaningful jobs and careers, and the Los Angeles “Hiring Our Heroes” fair is only the beginning!  Again, if you are in the greater Los Angeles area or at a neighboring base, be sure to register by June 13 for this hiring fair on July 10th.  It will be a very exciting day!  Until next time, take care.
