Fifty years ago this month, the U.S. military engaged in what would become one of the most hotly debated wars in American history: the war in Vietnam.
Many of the returning service members, most of which were drafted into the service, came home to a country divided over the conflict, and didn’t receive the honor or appreciation they earned while serving their country.
As the newly launched U.S. Vietnam War Commemoration website says, “[n]ow is the time to recognize and remember their service, honor, and sacrifice.”
From the website:
“The 2008 National Defense Authorization Act authorized the Secretary of Defense to conduct a program to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. To accomplish that, the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration was established to honor and pay tribute to Vietnam Veterans and their families. This will consist of a series of national and regional events; a Commemorative Partner Program to assist states and engage local communities and organizations to broaden the scope and reach of our activities; Educational Outreach such as traveling museums, regional exhibits, symposia, posters, graphic novels, maps, and other reference materials; an interactive web site to provide a central and easily accessible source of historical information, program content and activities via a master calendar; and a fundraising and sponsorship program.
We encourage all interested parties to join us in honoring the service and sacrifice of our veterans, their families and our allies.”
