Episode #84: Weekly News Roundup for Apr. 29

In the “This Week in the DoD” podcast for April 29:

The Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Agriculture hosted the 2011 Family Resilience Conference in Chicago this week. The conference is held each year for military family organizations to come together and discuss issues facing military families.

President Barack Obama has nominated CIA Director Leon E. Panetta to succeed current Secretary of Defense, Robert M. Gates, once he retires. In addition, Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, Commander, International Security Assistance Force will retire from military service and be nominated to replace Panetta as head of the CIA.

National Guard units and service members stationed across the country are being called up to respond to the flooding and tornadoes in Texas.

The U.S. Army Reserve recently celebrated it’s 103rd birthday on April 23rd. More than 196,000 reservists have mobilized since September 11, 2001, and more than 15,000 are currently deployed around the world.
