First Lady, Dr. Biden Discuss National Guard with Governors

Today First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden welcomed the members of the National Governor’s Association to the White House. In their address to America’s governors, they focused on helping military families and the role state governments play in helping National Guard families.

“I know I don’t have to tell any of you just how critical the National Guard is to our national security,” said Biden, whose son was deployed to Iraq as a member of the Delaware National Guard.  “Tens of thousands of our brave citizen soldiers are serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other regions –- and taken together, they make up nearly one half of our nation’s military strength.”

“They also respond to national disasters, humanitarian crises –- from 9/11 to Hurricane Katrina, to areas in need around the world — they answer the call under your leadership,” she added.
