Review Shows Progress Against al-Qaida, Taliban

By Ian Graham

AfghanistanToday the Afghanistan and Pakistan Annual Review was released. Amongst the many topics it addresses, it makes two clear points about the U.S. strategy.

First, components of the strategy are working well; senior al-Qaida leaders in Pakistan have less power and the Taliban’s progress in Afghanistan has slowed significantly.

Secondly, according to the review summary, the challenge remaining is “to make our gains durable and sustainable.” In the review it addressed that long-lasting progress relies on denying al-Qaida safe haven in western Pakistan and restoring basic stability and security in Afghanistan.
