Most Housing Rates Dip for 2011 as Pay, Subsistence Increase

Despite an overall decrease in military housing allowance rates, most servicemembers can expect to receive a bit more money in the new year.

The average servicemember will receive as much or more than this year, the Pentagon said yesterday. “On average, [allowance rates will] decrease about six-tenths of a percent,” said Cheryl Anne Woehr, housing allowance program analyst.

Yet, a provision of the 2011 Basic Allowance for Housing ensures that rates won’t decrease for servicemembers already residing in a given military housing area. Those people–the bulk of the force–will receive an average rate increase of 1.1 percent, Woehr said. Rate decreases would only to servicemembers who move to different housing locations after the Jan. 1 cutoff.

The military computes housing allowance rates in a given geographical area by considering median current market rent, in addition to average costs for utilities and renter’s insurance.
