To Receive the Medal of Honor

Next week, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta will receive the Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony. Giunta will receive the Medal of Honor for his courageous actions during combat operations against an armed enemy in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan in October, 2007.

He will be the first living recipient of the Medal of Honor for service in Iraq and Afghanistan. In interviews, Giunta has said repeatedly that he will accept the award for those with whom he served.  For the heroes who live to see the Medal of Honor, this is a shared sentiment.

During the Battle of Iwo Jima, Hershel W. Williams, like Giunta, was in his early twenties. Williams was a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps. On February 23, 1945 Williams demonstrated conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life when he advanced alone against enemy forces to help his company reach its objective.  He shares his thoughts in the video above on how he learned he would be receiving the Medal of Honor and how being a recipient has shaped his life.
