After an engine-room fire left the Carnival Cruise ship C/V Splendor without power in the Pacific Ocean about 200 miles south of San Diego, the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard came to the rescue. The ship and its 4,500 passengers arrived in port in San Diego, Calif., this morning at 9 a.m. PST. They had been stranded since a fire broke out in the engine room Monday morning, leaving the people aboard with limited food and water, as well as no air conditioning, phones, or hot food. They ate mainly canned crab meat, Pop-Tarts and Spam while being towed back to California, passengers reported.
To help ensure the safety of the ship’s 3,299 passengers and 1,167 crewmembers, the USS Ronald Reagan was diverted from training exercises to deliver 35 pallets of supplies to the Splendor. The request for assistance came from U.S. Coast Guard District Eleven in San Diego.
The fire, which shut down the ship’s main generators, caused no injuries and was quickly extinguished.
The Splendor was on a seven-day Mexican Riviera cruise. Carnival will provide full refunds to all guests, as well as reimbursement for transportation costs and a free future cruise.
