USS Cole Marks Tenth Anniversary of Attack

The tenth anniversary of the deadly attack on the USS Cole was marked today at the Norfolk homeport of the destroyer. Past and present crew members of the Cole attended the ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk.

U.S. Navy Adm. John C. Harvey Jr., commander,  U.S. Fleet Forces Command, addressed the audience, which included families of the victims of the attack.

He told the audience there are no words or actions that can begin to compensate for the lost of the loved ones. “It is their service and their sacrifice that we honor today.”

He also told former crew members of the Cole that he was proud to share this day with them and even more proud to share the same uniform.

“At the worst of times you showed us the best of our Navy. We will never forget what you did,” said Harvey.

The Oct. 12, 2000 attack on the Cole killed 17 sailors and injured 39 while the ship was harbored and refueling in the Yemeni port of Aden.
