This afternoon President Barack Obama awarded the nation’s highest honor for military valor posthumously to U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller.

Miller displayed immeasurable courage and valor, sacrificing his own life to save the lives of his seven of his team members and 15 Afghanistan National Army soldiers while serving as the Weapons Sergeant, Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha 3312 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Medal of Honor was presented to the parents of Staff Sgt. Miller in a ceremony held in the East Room of the White House.

“You gave your oldest son to America,” Obama said. “America is forever in your debt.”

After presenting the medal President Obama also spoke of the sacrifice of all the servicemembers who give their lives to protect America.

“Every American is safer because of their service,” he said, “and every American has a duty to remember and honor their sacrifice.”
