Teach, Coach, Mentor

The Ethiopian Defense Command and Staff College serves as a model for U.S. Army Africa partnership on the African continent. The college has four reserve officers, three army and one Air Force, that use their military background and experience as educators to bolster military education and professional development for mid level Ethiopian officers. The courses they teach cover topics ranging from military communication to leadership in joint operations.

“We’re here more to help them develop themselves so they can go on beyond our existence,” said Lt. Col. Randy Miller an instructor at the college.

More then a dozen Ethiopian officers are taking lead as instructors and training their fellow officers, with hopes for them to eventually run the college by themselves according to Lt. Col. Brent Batali.

The instructors at the college believe that this is a true sign of the Ethiopians ability to be self efficient and are excited about their roles switching from teacher to coach and soon mentor.
