By U.S. Navy Petty Officer Eric Holmes

The Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON)(SS/SW) Rick West is pushing social media sites to sailors and their family members as a method to communicate with him.

So far, the MCPON’s official Facebook page has has more than 10,000 fans and has more than 2,000 page views a day.

The MCPON said that the response he’s received from sailors and their families has been “surprising and encouraging.”

Because of the two-way communication that social media enables users, the MCPON has been able to take suggestions about the naval working uniform and about women serving on submarines and make changes to policies as well.

While the MCPON is encouraging sailors to use his social media sites to communicate, he said it’s important to first use your chain of command.
