Gen. Odierno Praises Iraq’s Progress

By U.S. Navy Petty Officer Jessica Robertson

With Iraq’s parliamentary elections coming early next year, conditions in the country continue to improve.

“Iraq is making steady progress as a sovereign country and a valued U.S. ally in the Middle East,” said U.S. Army Gen. Raymond Odierno, commander of Multinational Force Iraq. “Iraq is slowly reaffirming diplomatic, economic, and security ties with it’s neighbors.”

Over the past two years, improvised explosive device attacks in Iraq have been reduced by nearly 80 percent, as well as car bombings and suicide bombings being down 92 percent. This past November marked the lowest monthly number of incidents and civilian deaths since the war began in 2003.
