Reminder: SAVE Deadline is Oct. 14

President Barack Obama and the Office of Management and Budget announced a contest last month for Federal employees to submit cost-saving ideas for the fiscal year 2011 budget.

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, Oct. 14. The winner will be announced next month.  There is no cash award but the winner will meet President Obama.  A winning department will also be recognized based on the number of ideas that employees submit.

The Securing Americans Value and Efficiency (SAVE) Award program allows Federal employees to submit ideas for efficiencies and savings directly to the administration.

To submit an idea or get more information, visit the SAVE Award Web site.

Questions can be submitted via e-mail to DoDsaveaward[at]osd.mil.

Read the Deputy Secretary of Defense’s letter regarding SAVE here.

The OMB cautions to “not, under any circumstances, include any classified information in any submissions under this program. The information systems used in this program are not designed to transmit classified information.”

I know that the time for submissions has past, but as a military Dependent and a military pay technician I see where lots of money seems to be wasted every day. For starters… Dislocation allowances (DLA) for military PCS moves. intended to help people get started up in their homes when moving. Oddly enough it costs higher ranking officials approximately 3000.00 more than enlisted personnel. The money is to get utilities turned on etc, all deposits are the same, reguardless of rank, why do some people get such insane amounts. When joining the military you assume you will move, why should anyone get payed that excessively for a move in addition to travel expenses and base pay?
In addition to these costs military would do well to allow people to contract their own flights on flag carrying airlines. Contract flights generally cost double what it costs for personally procured airline tickets. Military CTO offices are a rip off at best.
Military pays for members overseas to marry foreign peopl as well. Visas, innoculations and exams to enter into the US is a reimbursable expense for a member who marries while stationed overseas, these costs can amount to thousands.
Just a few things that are seen every day in my place of employment.
