Adm. Mullen Fields Questions on “Ask the Chairman”

Yesterday at 2 p.m., Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen took four questions from servicemembers and civilians interested in military issues on “Ask the Chairman, a Virtual Town Hall” on the Pentagon Channel.

The show highlighted two major shifts in the Department of Defense’s public affairs strategy. Firstly, the show solicited questions via YouTube — people worldwide were encouraged to post video “responses” online to be used on the show — showing the department’s shift toward Web 2.0 technology.

Secondly, “Ask the Chairman” showed current military leaders’ desire to work directly with troops and civilians to solve issues. Their focus has shifted to one of openness and transparency, and a little clarity goes a long way.
