NATO Launches New Anti-piracy Operation off Somalia

Spc. Hugo Vasquez with AFN South reports about a new anti-piracy operation off Somalia’s coast.

In an effort to thwart pirate attacks, NATO has commenced Operation Ocean Shield. Currently the operation includes British, Greek, Italian, Turkish, and U.S. ships but more nations are expected to join.

Since 2007, pirate attacks have increased more than 200 percent according to the International Maritime Bureau.

Ocean Shield will continue the mission of Operation Allied Protector, which started last year.
