Colonel discusses multi-national heavy airlift operations from Hungary

By Petty Officer 3rd Class William Selby

U.S. Air Force Col. John D. Zazworsky, Jr., commander of the Heavy Airlift Wing, Papa Air Base, Hungary, told bloggers during a DoDLive Bloggers Roundtable July 29.  The Heavy Airlift Wing is the multinational, operational-level unit of the SAC program.

The wing’s upcoming airlift operations will provide the countries involved the ability to support humanitarian missions and combat ops, he said.

“Each nation gives and contributes in proportion to its share of flying hours,” said Zazworsky.

One of the primary requirements for the nations is to support the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

“The large majority of our missions will be in support of troop and equipment rotation and resupply for ISAF in Afghanistan,” Zazworsky said.

After watching his father narrowly escape a lynching in early 20th century Georgia, Eugene Bullard would escape the confines of racial tensions and a segregated country to become the first African-American combat pilot and one of the first African-American heroes of World War I.

Bullard, who grew up in Columbus, Ga., as one of 10 children of a former slave, left his hometown as a teenager, stowing away on a ship bound for Scotland and moved to London to fulfill his dreams.

Before the war began, Bullard moved to Paris where he made a reputation for himself as a professional boxer.
