A Day in Nashville

By U.S. Marine Sgt. Ted MacDonald

The second day of the 2009 Country Music Festival in Nashville Tenn., June 11 – 14 started early with a frenzy of country music interviews at the Nashville Convention Center. My first surprise was Lynn Anderson, who many U.S. Marines may remember sang “I never promised you a rose garden”. She toured with Bob Hope on his USO tours in Vietnam.  She’s over 60 but remains a classic southern beauty.

Next, I spoke with Craig Morgan, who served over 10 years in the U.S. Army and remains a huge fan of the military. Later that day I tried my vocal talent with “One Flew South” who are a great group of guys with amazing voices.

My next task for the day sent me to the convention center floor where I had my eight seconds of fame on a mechanical bull, okay maybe only four seconds. Trust me, it’s much harder than it looks.

I thought the day couldn’t get any better when the Grand Dame of Country music, Wynonna Judd stopped by for a chat.  But, the day wasn’t over yet. We were off to interview Montgomery Gentry. They were performing for wounded warriors. Great guys and huge patriots.

This experience has been incredible. I’ve been stopped in the streets and thanked for my service. Nashville is very hospitable and I can’t wait to come back and do this again!
