AC-130H Spectre Gunship: The Final Chapter

As the war in Afghanistan and our involvement in it winds down, an era in the U.S. Air Force will also be coming to an end.

The AC-130H Spectre Gunship is one of the most versatile and oldest aircraft to be used in Afghanistan. With an over 40-year career, the AC-130H has seen plenty of action. However, the Air Force is ready to move forward and welcome an upgraded version of the dynamic gunship once the drawdown is complete.

U.S. Airmen assigned to the 16th Expeditionary Special Operations Squadron share their thoughts on this proverbial ‘changing of the guard,’ and reminisce on good times with their own AC-130H affectionately named “Heavy Metal,” as they enjoy their final combat deployment with her.

Despite the sad retirement, it seems the members of the 16th ESOS are excited to see what lies ahead.
