Navy to Commission USS Minnesota

Today, the USS Minnesota (SSN 783) is being commissioned. This will be the tenth Virginia-class submarine to be commissioned by the Navy.

The team that built the boat was able to get it completed well ahead of schedule. Eleven months before its delivery deadline date the boat hit every mark on its readiness test and achieved the highest readiness score of any Virginia-class submarine thus far (

No doubt, this ship has a lot of potential. Particularly because its nuclear reactor produces 40,000 horsepower.

There will be a commissioning ceremony today at Naval Station Norfolk at 10:00 a.m.EST. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Jonathan Greenert will deliver remarks. You can watch the ceremony live on the Pentagon Channel.

Thank you to the US Navy for getting me out of Minnesota 33 years ago and into the fleet. May the USS Minnesota find fair winds and following sails.
